  • Long Day In Pretoria With Frog by Jonty Hurwitz – £31,000

Long Day In Pretoria With Frog by Jonty Hurwitz – £31,000

Long day in Pretoria with Frog

    50 x 50 x 45 cm approx. – Indoors or outdoors artwork

    Edition 6/8+4AP

Materials – Bronze and Stainless Steel

    Jonty Hurwitz:
Growing up in South Africa, I developed a deep and lasting love of frogs.  My most vivid childhood memory is of a long day spent out by a small waterhole on a hot day interacting with frogs.  They really and truly were gentle and friendly souls.  I even discovered that they enjoy a gentle caress along the spine – I never tried kissing one though, but I suppose I can claim to have experienced some level of intimacy with a frog.

As the years went by and adulthood took over, I somehow buried my frog feelings.  It was when I produced the first frog sculpture that I came to understand my feelings.  It was the small things – literally down to the extent to which I found I knew frog physiology on an intuitive level.

So it began. Eight years and 20 or so frog sculptures later, I feel like I’m just starting this relationship.

So here I present my latest frog portrait.  I’ve called this work “Long day in Pretoria with Frog”.

‘The Three Miss Graces’- Miss Aligned, Miss Chief and Miss Fit are girls with street savvy and won’t take any Sh*t from no one. These girls are a contemporary interpretation of The Three Graces in Greek mythology. The ancient Three Graces have been represented in painting and sculpture as the embodiment of joy, radiance and blossoming. The Miss Graces I have created here also embody these attributes but in a self confident, powerful and challenging way, that is more akin to the attitudes and aspirations of many women in the present day.

  • Hijra by Kim Francis – £18,000

Hijra by Kim Francis – £18,000

    Hijra
    Kilkenny limestone
    200cm x 65cm x 50cm

‘Hijra’  Is an expression of an organic creature or entity, that is self contained, nourishing of itself. Receptive and penetrating. Both male and female.  ‘Hijra’ is a south asian word meaning not male and not female. It is also an islamic word meaning migration, which also appealed to me as the form is so bird like.

    Kim Francis:
I aim to explore viscerally and emotionally, the elegance, beauty and menace of the natural world, as I experience it, using evocative contrasts of material and texture.”

    Other works by Kim:
