    Jeremy Moulsdale:
    My inspiration comes from the moments in life when my soul is touched and my spirit soars. Often simple moments, when I see the moon in the clear night sky or get lifted on the wings of a passing bird. My creative heart is stirred when I feel a sweet reverence for life. I try to listen to the advice of Robert Henri who said “The object isn’t to make art, but to be in that wonderful space that makes art inevitable”.

    “Based on ancient sculptures of European Mother Goddesses, this figure is so abstracted as to become a symbol – of strength, pro-creation, and the nurturing body from which incessant forms of life emerge.

    Parts of the body inessential for procreation have been made smaller, of even left away altogether: the head, the feet, the arms and hands.Yet the middle area of the body – the womb, the hips, the stomach are increased in size and importance.

    The theme is fecundity both literally and as a symbol of  other forms of creativity. Sculpturally, I was most  interested in two contrasting formal elements: of small and large size (head and hips) and of volume and roundness versus flatness or pointedness.”

    “Based on the archetype of Mother and Child recurrent in most cultures – Mary and the child Jesus, Isis and Osiris in Egypt – this is an image of protection and symbiosis: Mother and Child complement each other , as each head is missing one half of their face. Her hair and eyebrow line become the common bond that holds them together.

    Her inclined head expresses care, his lying position trust and rest: the concave space behind him represents an enclosed cave and place of safety.

    As the horizontal head is rather large in proportion, this sculpture also incorporates tinges of the adult man/woman relationship. The woman nurtures and protects the man as the son he once has been; and for fulfilling his needs and expectations, he worships her, raises her to become a saint, the Madonna of Christian history.”

    Salvaged Californian wildfire wood – scorched oak. I made this piece from some discarded oak that was part of the worst wildfires seen in California. Made on the anniversary of one of the worst atrocities to hit our fragile world. Find hope and Rise Up.

    EMERGENCE 

    coppiced pine,
    46x15x6cm,

    Yakisugi technique and cold pressed linseed oil. Supplied with a Welsh Slate stand. The material for this was destined as firewood but once I split it I could see the perfect details and growth rings. Although pine is a quicker growing tree than most it’s commonly cut down as a softwood building material. From a tiny seed grew something so perfect I wanted to show it’s story.

    reclaimed Welsh slate, Reclaimed scorched Oak, reclaimed and stained pine. This wall piece is made with reclaimed materials found locally. Like a lot of materials that have survived a long time and maybe might look worn out, I love discovering their beauty and importance and giving them back their life. Impenetrable?

    reclaimed oak, reclaimed Welsh Slate, reclaimed Pine. Environmentally friendly stain and scorched oak. This wall piece has been made with local materials. Giving unwanted materials a new life is so important to me, especially when there is so much beauty in them waiting to be discovered.
