“Based on ancient sculptures of European Mother Goddesses, this figure is so abstracted as to become a symbol – of strength, pro-creation, and the nurturing body from which incessant forms of life emerge.
Parts of the body inessential for procreation have been made smaller, of even left away altogether: the head, the feet, the arms and hands.Yet the middle area of the body – the womb, the hips, the stomach are increased in size and importance.
The theme is fecundity both literally and as a symbol of other forms of creativity. Sculpturally, I was most interested in two contrasting formal elements: of small and large size (head and hips) and of volume and roundness versus flatness or pointedness.”

“Based on the archetype of Mother and Child recurrent in most cultures – Mary and the child Jesus, Isis and Osiris in Egypt – this is an image of protection and symbiosis: Mother and Child complement each other , as each head is missing one half of their face. Her hair and eyebrow line become the common bond that holds them together.
Her inclined head expresses care, his lying position trust and rest: the concave space behind him represents an enclosed cave and place of safety.
As the horizontal head is rather large in proportion, this sculpture also incorporates tinges of the adult man/woman relationship. The woman nurtures and protects the man as the son he once has been; and for fulfilling his needs and expectations, he worships her, raises her to become a saint, the Madonna of Christian history.”

Reclaimed wildfire wood (California), reclaimed pine (Wales), 36”x24”, 2021.
Evidence shows that the Antarctic ice sheets are becoming increasingly unstable, and that the Greenland ice sheets could collapse entirely if global temperatures rise by 1.5C – which could happen as soon as 2030 if current trends persist. With this in mind I produced this piece from wood that I salvaged from the Californian wildfires – another direct effect of climate change. The piece has been sculpted to balance precariously, a narrative that is a literal representation of life as we know it. The heart on top also balances as if it can fall at any moment. The heart that represents our love for life also represents the knowledge we hold for what we need to do to reverse these changes. The materials used are all salvaged from the locality of Californian burn areas and near my studio in North Wales.

2021, 82x27cm, reclaimed ancient oak beam, reclaimed oak, reclaimed steel
Glen Farrelly: The main material for this piece is an old oak beam that I found buried , next to my house in a farmers field. It was completely submerged in soil, eaten by wood munchers and rot had started to set in. Being oak it has a high resilience and I could quickly see the potential it had to become an object to show life. This unwanted house beam, despite being thrown out ,was perfect to show hope. Hope that we can act against the devastating effects of climate change. We may be on the brink of destruction but much like the seeds within we can grow strong but only if we start to nurture what we have.

Andrew Lee: “The telltales used in this sculpture are the lightest and most sensitive possible while still retaining the necessary durability. To enhance the delicacy and natural movement of the telltales I have set them inside the strength and geometric solidity of a stainless steel frame.”
Unique Stainless steel foil telltales. Stainless steel frame, wires, clips, links. Plinth of four concrete pads. 1020mm high x 920mm wide x 920mm deep

Andrew Lee: “The largest of my free-standing sculptures, Wind Cloud divides space into a three-dimensional grid where at each point there are telltales free to align with the wind direction. The telltales are all identical so the wind acts uniformly on them, thereby helping to reveal a clear depiction of the wind’s movement. Support structure is kept to a minimum not only to allow the wind unencumbered access but also to focus the viewer’s attention on the beauty of the wind rather than the appearance of the object. Unique”

Materials: Both the Stave lines, notes and 12’’ LP base are made from stainless steel, the singing Reed Warbler is also made from good quality stainless steel cutlery, each note was marked out and cut by hand, the artist made jigs to enable him to bend the staves so they are identical.
The base was bolted to a hand made jig so it could be held in a lathe for the record lines to be added.
Rich Bindon: “The notes in the scale are from the 2002 Oasis song ‘Songbird’. (‘’Talking to the Songbird Yesterday’’) Oasis was one of my favourite bands from the 90’s. I feel that people viewing the piece will instantly understand the connection between a singing bird and the completed piece, with its record LP base and musical notes. The added twist being the notes are from an actual piece of music titled Songbird!”
Commissions of this piece: This sculpture could be recreated for unique commissions! eg. as a wedding gift with the ‘first dance’ as the sculptures attached notes. The possibilities are endless!

Elysium means ‘a state of Bliss’, this sculpture is inspired by the dream state, that brief moment between dreaming and waking when the world is perfect and the veil between our hopes and dreams is so thin it feels like reality. I imagine her placed by water, dreaming as she dries after a swim. Curled and contented in the sun.
