  • Pebble by Jonathan Loxley – £3,200

Pebble by Jonathan Loxley – £3,200

    PEBBLE.
    Moroccan black marble
    20 x 30 x 30
    Unique hand-carved sculpture

    Jonathan Loxley:

carve in marble because it is physical and dynamic. I feel it from the point of impact with a chisel, right down into my toes. For every swing of the hammer, my body is holding a position relative to that point of impact. Essentially, the marble dictates my every move – it demands I dance for it, and I appreciate that – desire it even.

The marble also takes me on a linear trip – I cannot go back. This forces me to be bold. I am in a Bootcamp that demands respect, discipline, stamina, forethought and final decisions – all the characteristics I felt I was, as a young man, in need of.

“This piece in inspired by the wealth of Neolithic and Bronze Age archaeology within the Dorset landscape where I live. The incredible monuments and burial mounds have stood the test of time and still survive today.

This female figure is emerging from a standing stone. She stands upon a Bronze Age burial mound and carries an offering in a Beaker style pot. The sun burst across her chest symbolises the solstice movements of the sun, which were highly important within the ceremonial landscape at that time.”    – Brendon Murless

Ancient ferns have been steeped in folklore and myths for centuries from Celtic shamanism carrying dried ferns for good luck, to beliefs that it is able to ward off witches and evil spirits and give protection. Due to the fern not producing a seed or flower this has lead to confusion as they seemed to spring up by magic.

One such folklore that captivated and inspired me was that the fern would only flower once a year exactly at the stroke of midnight on the summer solstice.
