    The Reader

    The Reader depicts those many people who become so engrossed in what they are reading that they become ‘as one’ with the book. It is also a homage to printed books. The Reader was shortlisted for the 2023 Visual Art Open International Emerging Artists Awards and also selected by the Royal Society of Artists for its 2024 Annual Exhibition in The Mall, London. Originally sculpted in clay, The Reader is available in a limited edition of 50 cold cast bronzes.

    I remember seeing this stone, one of many of the same kind in a big pile at the yard.
    Every time I went back, the pile was smaller, but she was still there. It made me think of an orphanage, with children waiting for adoption.
    On my last visit, she was there, alone. Everybody else had found a home. I took her with me.
    This is how she feels inside. Unloved.

    Allan Mackenzie:
    This sculpture is suitable for external use and is cast in bronze resin, holding a steel pair of shears.  This is mounted on a 1.5m copper tube with the complete piece given two coats of clear protective lacquer.
    This piece portrays either an estate gardener or much loved member of the family generally keeping things tidy within the garden.  Like most of my sculptures in this range he can be mounted within the foliage of the garden or as a stand alone piece.

    Inspired by the Scottish rams (tups) when I lived in the rolling countryside near Dumfries in Scotland. He has a cheeky glint in his eye even though his stance is seemingly aggressive , there is a sense of uncertainty and ridiculousness that brings a smile to everyone’s face when they see him.
