KING OF THE CASTLE – LIFE-SIZE JACK RUSSELL

    Jane Shaw on this sculpture:
This little fellow was a pleasure to sculpt to create an indoor or outdoor bronze animal dog sculpture.  It was a commission of a lovely Jack Russell, who was small but bursting  with character and charm.

Jack Russell Terrier, also called Parson Russell Terrier or Parson Jack Russell Terrier, developed in England in the 19th century for hunting foxes both above and below ground. It was named after the Reverend John Russell, a keen hunter who created the breed.  Because they have a broad genetic make-up, they do not breed true to type and so are a strain of working terrier and can vary a great deal in looks!

Whilst this bronze animal sculpture of a terrier dog was  based on a wire-haired Jack Russell, he did have quite long legs, so there was definitely a hint of parsons in him somewhere!

As with all my commissions, I began with a small maquette in wax of the Jack Russell Terrier, and then scaled him up and built an armature of a life-size dog for this terrier breed.  I worked with clay, and built a sturdy looking body, but struggled with the head – often decapitating him and beginning again a number of times. My model was a wire-haired Jack Russell, so his face was not clean cut like many short haired dogs, and he did have a rather unique look which I tried to capture, without loosing the overall feeling of Jack Russell!  Because he had sadly died, I had to borrow another Jack Russell who would often run around my studio, never standing still, and playing with my dogs outside as I continued to sculpt this animal in clay.  Not a very good model for a bronze sculpture, as they never stand still!  But his character shone through which I loved.  I had to include the tilt of the head to one side, which Terriers often portray when they are engaged with you but perhaps don’t fully understand the human command.

FOREVER FRIENDS – PAIR OF LURCHERS (LIFE-SIZE)

Bronze: £16,000 each as a limited edition of 9

    Jane Shaw on this sculpture:
Lurchers are special dogs and I have always found their beauty very compelling as I pass them in the street or on a walk, or visit a house full of lurchers, or whippets.  These dogs can vary in size and they can be mixed with greyhound or whippet which make them on the smaller side.  Or they can be bred with Irish Wolfhound or Saluki which would make them a lot bigger.  Generally, the lurcher is skinny with long, athletic legs, large chest, small ears and a long muzzle.

The coat of a lurcher tends to be longer.  Whilst they can move at such speed and so elegantly, they do not need a lot of exercise at all.  In fact they are very happy sitting on the sofa for most of the day!  They are very tactile and love to cuddle up to their owner and be loved and adored.  Although the saddest thing is they do not like cats and we have in fact had to rescue a friend’s cat from their two lurchers.  They had tried to kill the cat on numerous occasions.  So, lurchers are not always as gentle as they seem!

In this bronze sculpture of the pair of lurchers seen together, there is a huge amount of unspoken words being said between the two of lurchers and this is what I wanted to convey when I sculpted these two dogs.

The lying lurcher is possibly about to role onto his back as the standing lurcher walks towards him to nuzzle his nose….the friendship is deep and valued as all lasting friendships should be!  We can learn a great deal from the life of a dog.

This bronze animal dog sculpture is ideal for the garden or indeed in a larger open space inside.  They can be cast in either bronze as a limited edition of 12 or as a bronze resin or iron resin (rust) as a limited edition of 48.  You can choose what sort of finish you would like.

Also available in iron and Verdigris grey colours

THE LAST BOW – Head of a Horse (Outside piece)

    Bronze resin: £3,240
Bronze: £8,000 (as a limited edition of 12)

    Jane Shaw on this sculpture:
The shape of horses heads vary hugely in size, shape, personality and feel.  I never tire of looking at the head of a horse.  It is a subject which has been represented in art through the ages in many shapes and guises.  Ironically, you often see horses heads in the fields, looking down, munching away, or occasionally you may spot them sniffing the ground, before they move onto the ground and role!

I tried to sculpt a horse head on its nose a number of years ago, using plaster and scrim and infact it ended up a terrible mess, as gravity got the better of me, and working out their shape when on the nose I found very hard.  However, I returned to it a few years ago, and worked slowly on the sculpture, often leaving it to lie dormant for many months in my studio, in its raw state of plaster and scrim.  It’s amazing how the eye constantly scans shapes, over time, and develops an understanding of what is right and wrong.  And then during one of the lock downs, I decided to finish the sculpture.

This bronze or resin horse head represents, for me, the last bow.  A passing of time from one place to another.   Perhaps its quite a sad piece, but one of thankfulness and calm.  The horse has had a good life and he has returned to you, to say ‘thank you’ for the last time.

This bronze equestrian sculpture of a head of a horse can be cast in bronze as a limited edition of 12 and can be mounted on a corten steel base which is bespoke to your requirements depending on the space.

It can look spectacular inside the home or in the garden or courtyard.

    Jane Shaw on this sculpture:
SPEED – HEAD OF A HORSE

The equestrian world has been in my blood since I was a young child and now my love of horses has passed on to one of my daughters, so once again the house is filled with equestrian photos and drawings! The animal yard is often a place where I am found sketching horses, trying to capture the essence and movement of this wonderfully graceful animal.

For this equestrian sculpture, I was inspired by the Head of the Horse of Selene from the Parthenon in Greece which has become one of the most widely-recognised and popular of the Parthenon sculptures. Whilst that horse head was carved in marble, I sculpted my horse’s head in clay and have kept the markings from my knife – giving a much more rugged and sculpted finish. I never like the viewer to forget that they are looking at a sculpture first and therefore like to show off the material used.

The finished equestrian piece is of a life size horse’s head and is slightly more stylised than my other sculptures, but with a total focus on the head of the horse. I wanted to capture the horse when he’s out of control, his head is strong, and his ears are back, and his power is beyond human control. The head of a horse can say so much.

This equestrian sculpture can be displayed inside in a large area, ideally at eye level, and its on a Portland stone base, but equally it could rest on a garden wall or be given a plinth of your choice to fit the space it will fill.

  • Mrs Darling by Jane Shaw – £2,500

Mrs Darling by Jane Shaw – £2,500

MRS DARLING – Head of a Zwartbles Sheep

    LIMITED EDITION OF 25

    MATERIAL: BRONZE RESIN

    MEASUREMENTS: H 45 CM (147CM INCLUDING STAND) L40CM W40CM

    BASE: BLACK METAL BASE

    Jane Shaw on this sculpture:

MRS DARLING – HEAD OF A ZWARTBLES SHEEP

Mrs Darling is a pet Zwartbles Sheep who lived with us for over two years.  She would come into the house, loved horse feed, pasta and bread.  Basically any food other than sheep pellets!  She would wander around the garden eating all the flowers and grass and then wondered why she was banished to the stable at night rather than our house!

She became old and wise, and had an amazingly expressive face, which I would constantly endeavour to draw and photograph in order to try and capture her spirit.  Sadly, I still have not managed to create a good drawing of her.

Before she died, I decided to create a  sculpture of her face in clay, and so found myself in the yard for hours and hours and this is what I produced as a bronze wild life sculpture, even though Mrs Darling was more of a pet!  Certain features I have exaggerated like her extraordinary ears which were always moving in opposite directions to one another.  Her huge staring eyes, always watching your every move in total silence.  The wonderful textural contrast from her black smooth face to her big thick body of fur.

Mrs Darling died soon after I completed the sculpture which broke our hearts and saddened many who knew her in Dorset.   She was a special old girl.

As a life-size bronze sculpture, I have positioned it on a thin, dark metal stand to minimise distraction from her face.  It’s at eye level or just below and looks very striking in the corner of a room with contemporary or antique surrounds, or in the garden or a court yard.

The sculpture can be cast as a limited edition of 25 in bronze resin.

For me, this sculpture is about vision. It’s about looking ahead and finding ways to move forward, listening to our intuition, our inner guide. Being in harmony with nature, working together with the natural world to find solutions that support us all. Is the bird the guide? Or is the man the guide? Or are they working together to find their way, creating a new path for themselves and for others to follow.

    Bronze edition of 8
    61cm high x 52cm x 13cm

The Voyager is on his journey across the mysterious ocean of life.  While the ocean has many waves that can rock his boat, he is calm and focused.
Although he is alone on his journey, he has a guide – the bird, who connects him to his natural instincts and spirit. The bird looks ahead and helps guide the way.
He is held by his boat and trusts that the boat will carry him.
In his hand is a staff which he holds to feel supported. It  connects him to the support of all those who have helped help him make his great journey.

    Young Minotaur
Ltd Ed. Bronze on stainless steel stand

    The YOUNG MINOTAUR
I wanted the sculpture to show a more human, compassionate side to the Minotaur. I wanted to
get away from the mad, bad, insane monster condemned to the labyrinth.
This is the Minotaur when he is young man, with all the confidence and pride of youth. He’s
content with himself and the way he looks. He doesn’t care what other people think.
