  • Lioness Stalking by Hamish MacKie £14,000

Lioness Stalking by Hamish MacKie £14,000

    Bronze, Signed Hamish Mackie
    Numbered Edition of 12
    Dated 2023

    36cm high x 74cm long x 31cm wide (14″ x 29″ x 12″)

“On about my third trip to Africa, I witnessed a lioness catch and kill a young zebra, not more than 30 yards from my vehicle. This was one of my first experiences of the raw power of the natural world and actually left me shaking with adrenalin.

I have since sent many happy hours studying lion at Borana, with the Lewa lion monitoring team in Northern Kenya.

With my 2023 lion sculptures, I set out to have a lioness in the process of stalking a warthog, and then the final chase. I wanted to capture the intent and muscular bulk of these big cats, in a pose with shoulders and hips opposing each other.”    – Hamish MacKie

  • Lioness, life size by Hamish Mackie £79,000

Lioness, life size by Hamish Mackie £79,000

    Bronze, Signed Hamish Mackie
    Numbered Edition of 9
    Dated 2019

    Sculpture (not including base) 105cm high x 41cm wide x 245cm long / 41.5″ x 16″ x 96.5″ // Base (core ten) 8cm deep x 52cm wide x 205cm long / 3″ x 20.5″ x 81″

Weight including core ten base: 285kg

Sculpted from observation of lion in the wild at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya, this bronze lioness sculpture is life size. Hamish spent a week tracking lion with the monitoring team. He was able to observe these magnificent animals at close quarters, following and photographing them over several days.

As well as a comprehensive understanding of their anatomy, Hamish’s studies also enabled him to convey their spirit and proud bearing. The loose handling of his material and his trademark gestural mark making help to bring the essence of the lioness alive.

Made at the same time as Lion Life Size 2019, these two lion sculptures make an impressive pair. They would look equally striking in an indoor or outdoor setting – perhaps placed in a large garden or courtyard as a focal point, arranged in a reception hall or flanking a staircase.

“I have wanted to sculpt lions at a life size scale for a few years, so I asked Ian Craig of the Northern Rangelands Trust in Kenya the best place to observe them. He advised me to visit Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, a favourite place of mine. I spent a week with Patrick, a guide from the lion monitoring team, studying nothing but lion. We drove several hundred km in search of lion and I was able to observe and photograph the king of the beasts. I wanted to capture that real sense of a lion walking, not just the feet going forwards, but the whole swagger – the tail, spine, shoulder blades all working together. Even the subtle lolloping of the head from side to side! I wanted to convey a real feeling of their weight and power under a hot dry and dusty African sun.”    – Hamish MacKie

Leopard Head Study by Hamish MacKie £2,700

    Bronze, Signed Hamish Mackie
    Numbered Edition of 25
    Dated 2023

    14cm wide x 19cm deep x 27cm high [including 9cm high Kilkenny stone base] (5.5″ x 7.5″ x 11.5″)

“I have been lucky enough to study leopards with the AfriCat foundation at Okonjima in Namibia.

With my 2023 studies of lion, leopard and cheetah heads I have sculpted each to the same scale. As a trio or a pair, you can really get an idea of the size differences between them. I wanted people to be able to see the individual species evolution and how they have honed skill sets to become the very different predators they are.”    – Hamish MacKie

  • Hare Sitting by Hamish Mackie £11,000

Hare Sitting by Hamish Mackie £11,000

    Bronze, Signed Hamish Mackie
    Numbered Edition of 12
    Dated 2023

“On a research trip to Barcelona, I saw several wonderful sculptures with lovely texture. I was also inspired to see how Picasso’s style had changed throughout his working life.

With my bronze Hare Sitting sculpture (and with Hare Running), I set out to have texture lead the way. In my mind, all marks and texture have to have a purpose. There is always a risk that artists can overwork and so ruin the spontaneity and liveliness of a surface that captures the physical energy of the making. I have always been fascinated that a good foundry can capture this into bronze. It’s one thing for me to leave a finger print in soft wet clay, quite another to cast that level of detail into bronze. It makes smooth seem easy!”

  • Greyhound by Hamish MacKie £22,000

    Greyhound by Hamish MacKie £22,000

    Bronze, Signed Hamish Mackie
    Numbered Edition of 12
    Dated 2022

    91cm high x 35cm wide x 115cm long
    (36″ x 13.5″ x 45″)

“The greyhound is a type of dog known as a sight hound (or gaze hound) which hunts using sight and speed, rather than scent and endurance (as a scent hound would). For centuries, they have been used for coursing and racing. As well as having keen vision, sighthounds have a flexible back and long legs to help chase after agile, quick-moving prey like deer and hares. They also have a deep chest to support a large heart and very efficient lungs, and their body is lean and wiry to keep their weight at a minimum. The greyhound’s anatomy is extremely well-adapted to its function. They can reach speeds of 72km an hour. Only a cheetah is faster over short distances on land.

The greyhound’s origins are uncertain, but in ancient times, they were revered as gods. Interestingly, they are the only breed of dog mentioned in the Bible. In the Middle Ages, their prestige was still such that a law was passed prohibiting anyone other than royalty or nobility to own or hunt with them.”    – Hamish MacKie

Like all Hamish’s animal sculptures, his greyhound was created with a close understanding of the animal’s anatomy and form. Hamish worked from life, having a greyhound model – Monty – in the studio. The sculpture is imbued with a character and energy which brings the dog’s real physicality to life.

  • Cowrie by Hamish MacKie £32,000

    Cowrie by Hamish MacKie £32,000

    Stainless Steel, Signed Hamish Mackie
    Numbered Edition of 12
    Dated 2024

    38cm high x 63cm long x 47cm wide
    (15″ x 25″ x 18.5″)

Hamish has created a contemporary cowrie shell sculpture, cast into marine grade stainless steel and hand-polished to a mirror finish.

Since the earliest times, cowrie shells have been regarded as objects of value to many different cultures. They are variously associated with womanhood and fertility, birth and death, good luck and wealth. The name cowrie comes from the Swahili word ‘kauri’ meaning ceramic or porcelain.

“Ever since observing recently orphaned cheetah cubs Toki and Sambu on one of my first visits to Lewa Wildlife conservancy in Kenya, cheetah have been a favourite subject of mine. I sculpted my first head in 1997 out of African beeswax.

  • Bald Eagle by Hamish MacKie £72,000

Bald Eagle by Hamish MacKie £72,000

    Bronze, Signed Hamish Mackie
    Numbered Edition of 12
    Dated 2023

    194cm high x 132cm long x 62cm wide (76.5″ x 52″ x 24.5″)

Having seen bald eagles in Canada and the US, and then studied them at Batsford Falconry centre, Hamish was delighted to be commissioned to make this life size sculpture by an American collector.

It is to be mounted on a large granite boulder outdoors in front of the house with the estuary behind. Hamish took a scientific approach, having each feather laser cut for the complex armature. This detailed sculpture has a wonderful feeling of flight as the bird banks around. Possibly one of Hamish‘s most dynamic sculptures to date.
