    This elegant sculpture captures the poised stillness of a kingfisher, perched lightly as if watching the water below. The smooth, refined form distils the bird to its essential lines, while the rich green patina evokes the iridescent tones of its plumage.

    The elongated, flowing base gives the piece a sense of lift and balance, as though the kingfisher could take flight at any moment. Its slender beak and upright posture convey both precision and patience — the quiet focus of a master hunter.

    “Otters are another of my favourite subjects. I have such a passion for otters that my youngster daughter is named Otterlie! Humans have always felt a bond with these intelligent animals. They appear in the folklore and mythology of many different cultures including Norse, Asian and Native American.

    Henry Williamson’s famous book Tarka the Otter (1927) and Gavin Maxwell’s Ring of Bright Water (1960) have become much-loved classics. The award-winning 2024 documentary Billy and Molly: An Otter Love Story by Charlie Hamilton James is a more recent true story about one man’s relationship with a wild otter on Shetland.” – Hamish MacKie

    “Legend of the Lough was inspired by a commission I received from the arts council under the Re-Imaging Arts Program. The sculpture celebrates the original folktale of the creation of Lough Neagh, where a Horse God of the Tuatha de Danann Eochu let his horse rest in a valley  in the middle of Ulster. The horse, which was a magical horse of the sea(think of the Guinness ad from the 90s) , proceeded to dissolve and flood the valley.” – Eamonn Higgins

    This sculpture is also available as a scaled down version in bronze (numbered edition of 25) or silver (numbered edition of 6).

    The octopus is an enigmatic, complex creature and highly adaptable. It can regrow lost arms and change its colour to match its surroundings. People have been fascinated by the octopus for millennia. The ancient Greeks decorated coffins, pottery and ritual ornaments with octopus motifs.

    Octopus are known for being extremely intelligent. Scientific studies have proved they are capable of sophisticated learning and problem solving skills. There are many stories about how octopus have fused lights in their tanks, squirted water at individual researchers, and unscrewed lids of containers!  Two thirds of their five hundred million neurons are in their arms, which means they can not only touch but also taste and smell with their tentacles.

    Hamish has sculpted an explorative octopus inquisitively reaching out to touch. Of course under water, octopus appear almost weightless. It’s this freedom of movement, and having no joints, that Hamish wanted to capture in this characterful sculpture. Each of the over 600 suckers has been individually handmade. From the plasticine original, a high resolution scan was taken to produce a intricately detailed scaled down version cast into both silver and bronze.
