    Richard Baronio:  Artist Statement

I build my sculptures by welding one small length of stainless steel rod to another, building up forms that, when all the lengths of rod have been welded to each other, no longer look like a number of steel rods joined together.  Instead, the welding itself has created an overall surface which is totally distinct from the individual pieces, and the forms that result are no longer linear and geometric, like the factory supplied rods, but complex organic volumes with intricately varied surfaces.

This transformation from the standardized and geometric to the individual and organic underlies my whole approach to sculpture.  I am continuously looking for forms and juxtapositions of forms that I have not seen before, but that remind me of or symbolize for me some previous physical situation or emotional state.  I cannot reproduce the original, but I can conjure up a physical suggestion that hopefully carries some of the emotional energy I found so compelling.

    About the Artist

-‘ A lifelong passion for art and sculpture together with his practical nature led Joseph to take up an apprenticeship in stone masonry. Joe trained as a stone mason at York College where he learnt the craft to an advanced level. This gave him the ability to create striking stone pieces in marble and limestone. Joe also produces bronze sculpture using the ancient lost wax technique. • Kinetic Study 20 by Edward Willis – £485

Kinetic Study 20 by Edward Willis – £485

    About the sculpture
This piece is one in a series that is about contrast and duality. The very solid, grounded and definite figure of the resin base gives support to the more ephemeral, complicated and less certain mobile structure. The two parts give sense and purpose to each other, perhaps in the way that two people might, or even in the way two facets of an individual personality might.
    About the artist
Now living and working in Bath, Edward has a degree in philosophy from Bristol University and in his kinetic sculptures he explores ideas of fragility and strength as well as balance and resolution. Drawing inspiration from the natural world and the human figure, his work is often suggestive of botanical or skeletal structures. The elegant, fluid forms express a sense of harmony and rhythmic energy, coupled with a feeling of tranquil equilibrium.

    Crouch
With this sculpture I wanted to convey points in our lives when we are defeated.
This is shown in the pose of the figure falling to his knee and protecting himself,
as he gathers his strength to rise again.

    Mother
Inspired to carve a female figure emerging from this timber, looking strong and
towards the sky, drinking in the sunlight similar to the tree she came from. The
child was not in my original design but evolved as I carved the wood and seemed
fitting to evoke thoughts of the next generation.
The highlighted rings of the tree shows us the years of life that have passed.
I wanted the sculpture and the name to be open to interpretation, some see
motherhood for example, others see Mother Nature.

Mother – Originally carved in wood, this is a limited edition cold cast from a mould taken of the original.
