Jilly Sutton: I carved the original wood during a windy autumn when we get strong on-shore east winds from the river where we live. I love to stand bracing the wind in my face – eyes closed …wonderful!

Many bird species form long term partnerships for raising their young, and couples may stay together for many years. Each year when they reunite, they perform courtship dances that reinforce their bond.
This lovely elegant piece is the largest sculpture we have from Peter this year. It would make a super centrepiece in a garden, as it looks elegant from all angles.
Peter has used a number of sculpting techniques to create the various contrasting finishes on this lovely sculpture. He achieves the brushed effect of the feathers by stroking the stone with a blunt rasp. To create the shiny parts, he sands the stone smooth, then heats it and applies clear wax.
It is very easy to light sculptures with this matt white surface, so with clever use of spotlights you can enjoy it at night as well!
Springstone is the local name for a very hard variety of serpentine stone. It is suitable for outdoor display, as it is dense and impermeable and has very few flaws that might be exacerbated by frost action.

About the artist: Andy Elton – Introduction In Andy Elton’s long and productive life two distinct but symbiotic careers have run side by side. Both have involved the changing of materials by altering their appearances and, in the process, making what is otherwise dead come alive – for this is the enviable, God-like gift possessed by all artists. His first career was as an artist in sculpture, drawing and printmaking, and especially the casting of small objects in which heavy metal is made light by joyous inscribed images, many of them of a deeply personal but still accessible character. Elton’s first experience of sculpture was at school where he was introduced at an early stage to stone carving. (Those were the days, were they not, when such an activity as stone carving was encouraged in secondary education.) This lit inside him the flame for making art, for crafting objects with his own hands. Imagination made fact. An important recent outcome of this early fascination was the exhibition in London’s Cavendish Square in 2013 of My Lady, the first ambitious figure carving to be sited anywhere in London for a long time.
