  • Duyan by Marian Ironmonger – £3,000

Duyan by Marian Ironmonger – £3,000

    Duyan:  Cradle

Edition of 10 in bronze resin on an oak base

Duyan is an interpretation of a Philippine lullaby, Sa Ugoy ng Duyan, the music of which was composed by Lucio San Pedro who drew inspiration from the melody his mother hummed to lull her young children to sleep.

Following is an English translation of the lyrics:

    The Sway of the Cradle

    English translation by Lillyan Corpuz

May my memories of olden days never fade,

of times I was but a small child in the arms of Mother.

I yearn to hear again my beloved Mother’s lullaby,

her song of love as she lulled me in the cradle.

In the silence of my deep peaceful slumber,

the stars hold vigil to guard and watch over me.

In my Mother’s embrace, life is heaven.

My suffering heart desires the sway of the cradle.

How I long to sleep in my old cradle, Mother.

    Oh! Mother

High Jinks by Pete Rogers – £2,600

    High Jinks
    Stainless steel and galvanised steel

    160cm high on frame 125cm x 160cm

High Jinks is a play on the 1920’- 30’s Flying circus where wing-walking acrobats performed on the top
wing of biplanes. The biplane here is based on the SE5 WW1 biplane developed at the Royal Aircraft Factory and used by the flying corp. With prescient knowledge, the mouse on the wing is holding on with his teeth and taking on Superman’s flying pose.

  • Nurturing 2002 by Beatrice Hoffman – £2,950

    Nurturing 2002 by Beatrice Hoffman – £2,950

    Nurturing 2002

    Bronze Resin  66 x 55 x 33cm – £2950

“This work shows two faces locked together in the most intimate way, but their gaze is strangely distant. The strength of the work is the tension that exists between the two heads which are bound together. The mother figure angles her cheek to her child in a responsive manner but faces away with her eyes fixed to the horizon.

At the same time the child nuzzles the mother , but its kiss is a pout that tells us that it knows that the time for nurturing is over. The nurturer and the nurturer are also the rejecter and the rejected = to encapsulated this using such economy of means is an amazing feat. It is this that makes the figure truly modern. I love you, says the big heads, but it’s time you moved on – me and your dad have got things we want to do.”

There is movement of the right head pulling away from the left, lower head . I thought of a human bird chick (on the left), that greedily demands food of its mother – pecking kissing, feeding. The space between the two is cramped. Within their shared closeness it shows need, dependency on the one hand, and the longing to find freedom from the responsibility of care on the other. With the sizes of the heads being quite similar, there is ambivalence: are they mother and child, or lovers reproducing that first intense love affair at the beginning of life?

In optics, a dichroic material is either one which causes visible light to be split up into distinct beams of different wavelengths (colours) (not to be confused with dispersion), or one in which light rays having different polarizations are absorbed by different amounts.
