Ancient ferns have been steeped in folklore and myths for centuries from Celtic shamanism carrying dried ferns for good luck, to beliefs that it is able to ward off witches and evil spirits and give protection. Due to the fern not producing a seed or flower this has lead to confusion as they seemed to spring up by magic.
One such folklore that captivated and inspired me was that the fern would only flower once a year exactly at the stroke of midnight on the summer solstice.

Ivy has been used in Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Pagan and Christian symbolism and mythology since ancient times. It has historically been presented to brides and grooms as a symbol of everlasting life, devotion, fidelity and loyalty and also believed to have magical powers and provide protection, healing and good luck, guarding against negativity and trauma. Druids believe ivy represents peace with its ability to bind different plants together.
But I leave this sculpture open to the viewer’s own interpretation…

This piece was inspired by walks in the woods – the beauty in the sound of the wind and birds singing. It also has an environmental message, as there is evidence that trees communicate to each other though mycelium underground, we need to look after our trees and ancient woodlands not only for our own future but the myriad of flora, fauna and funga they support.

Will Carr: “‘Meandering Valleys’ kinetic sculpture moves effortlessly in the lightest of winds. Emulating the sensation of walking through a valley with a meandering river, this sculpture continuously reflects shapes that surround us in nature.
This contemporary sculpture is a mesmerising piece to watch as it constantly forms new shapes, having varied personalities in different weather conditions.
