Otters Playing by Pippa Unwin – £3,200

    Otters playing –
    Alabaster, copper and Portland roach

This is a beautiful example of Alabaster and all of the colour and wonder it brings.

Alabaster is a soft, translucent stone that has been used for centuries to create beautiful works of art. Its smooth surface and delicate coloration make it a popular material for carving, and it has been used to create everything from sculptures to jewellery.

    Pippa Unwin
Otters Playing – I live in South Devon beside the river Avon which flows down to the sea near Burgh Island. The river is a marine reserve and we have a family of otters there. I love the grace of their movement in the water. They swim through the reeds, represented here by reclaimed beaten copper (I was pleased to find some with verdigris for perfect colouring!). The markings in the brown alabaster is really beautiful and slightly translucent – it evokes the light rippling through the water.

    Maharani
Maharani is a bright and beautiful modern woman confidently facing and overcoming all the world throws at her. Happily engaged, however, she has an independent streak and needs no Maharaja to support her. Whilst seemingly aloof and unobtainable in the company of her friends and family Maharani is the life and soul.  Just let the cocktails flow!

Poison Ivy is much misunderstood. She is on the side of nature, a great defender of plant life, but no eco-terrorist. Shy by nature, not that one would suspect it, here she waits patiently at
the party’s edge for an opportunity to deliver a message. Is it an invitation or a warning?

    Calypso

In Greek mythology the nymph Calypso was exiled on the island of Ogygia by Zeus for supporting the defeated Titans in their war against the Olympian gods.
According to Homer’s Odyssey on his journey home from the Trojan Wars Odysseus was shipwrecked and washed up on the shore of Ogygia where he was detained by the lonely Calypso for seven years. She fell deeply in love with him and promised him immortality to stay with her, but Odysseus could not bear being separated from his wife, Penelope
His patron goddess Athena intervened and persuades Zeus to order Calypso to free Odysseus, which she bitterly agreed to. Calypso provided Odysseus with tools and wood to build a boat. While Athena set the wind behind his boat as he departs, Calypso stands proudly but sadly watching Odysseus’s boat sail away, contemplating what might have been.

  • Positive Division by Glen Farrelly – £995

Positive Division by Glen Farrelly – £995

Positive Division‘, 2023, storm fallen field maple, Yakisugi technique, linseed oil.  85cm high. £995 plinth £55

For plant cells to divide, a new cell wall must be built to create two cells from one. The process of building a new cell wall to separate the dividing plant cell is called plant cytokinesis.
We need division to grow, with growth there is hope. Let’s protect our ecosystem and welcome those healthy divisions of life.

I work with reclaimed and storm fallen timber using an ancient Japanese technique called ‘Yakisugi’. This method preserves the wood – Yaki means to heat with fire, and sugi is cypress. By slightly charring the surface of the wood without combusting the whole piece, the wood becomes waterproof through the carbonisation and is thus more durable. It also protects against insects, as well as making the wood fire retardant. All my work aims to be as sustainable as possible and I will only use natural materials.
