‘African Triptych I’ is a set of three studies of the powerful sculptural forms found in African hair styles reflecting their social hierarchy within their tribe. Some believed hair could help divine communication as it was the highest part fo the body and could be elevated even further. The styling of the hair is a very trusted process given to close relatives as it was believed if a strand fell into the hands of an enemy they could harm the owner. It is was and is a very social activity which everyone can relate to. These studies went on the inspire ‘African Triptych II’ which combines the study with art and masks from the same tribes.

Alabaster is a soft, translucent stone that has been used for centuries to create beautiful works of art. Its smooth surface and delicate coloration make it a popular material for carving, and it has been used to create everything from sculptures to jewelry
Pippa Unwin: Winter Hare – Most winters, I take part in International Snow Carving Competitions as captain of the GB snow carving team. We have been to Breckenridge several times and been lucky enough to have seen some of the local wildlife – a fox, moose and a little Snow Hare. This white Alabaster with the traces of black reminded me of the hares, so I felt I had to carve one.

Pippa Unwin: Red Kite – I’ve often seen Red Kites searching for carrion above Salisbury Plain – they are beautiful birds on the wing and I wanted to try to show the elegance and grace of their flight.

Otters playing – Alabaster, copper and Portland roach
This is a beautiful example of Alabaster and all of the colour and wonder it brings.

Pippa Unwin Otters Playing – I live in South Devon beside the river Avon which flows down to the sea near Burgh Island. The river is a marine reserve and we have a family of otters there. I love the grace of their movement in the water. They swim through the reeds, represented here by reclaimed beaten copper (I was pleased to find some with verdigris for perfect colouring!). The markings in the brown alabaster is really beautiful and slightly translucent – it evokes the light rippling through the water.

Val on this sculpture: “I have tried to capture the weight and weariness of an elderly man sat alone reminiscing about times gone by.”

Maharani Maharani is a bright and beautiful modern woman confidently facing and overcoming all the world throws at her. Happily engaged, however, she has an independent streak and needs no Maharaja to support her. Whilst seemingly aloof and unobtainable in the company of her friends and family Maharani is the life and soul. Just let the cocktails flow!
