After watching wild honey bees interact with each other and seeing them swarming near my workshop I was inspired to create this sculpture to emphasize the plight of the bees and the integral connection between humans and nature. Bee populations in the wild are in declining globally, which directly impacts nature as a whole and our food security. The queen bee also holds symbolism of fertility (as she is the only bee capable of reproduction), leadership, community and hard work. In folklore, bees are seen as protectors of woodland spirits and are associated with family and protection.

Inspired by the excitement of seeing the first arrivals of migrating swallows in spring which to me symbolises the start of summer, as more arrive I never tire of watching these beautiful swallows darting over the sky In the summer sun.

While making the tower I was thinking how from deep in childhood I was interested in skulls, fossils, artifacts, ancient traces in time of both human structures but also of nature. We cannot be anything but a part of this. And how this being in time gives us comfort in belonging, knowing we are part of an immensity, which in its vastness is beyond time, while showing us, with an earthen kindness that we are limited and tied to time, and always going to end.

In making this tower, I travelled through rooms and corridors, up staircases and ladders, leading towards the garden at the top, a roof terrace where a bath offers a panoramic view stretching across time and space. A moment of peace the bath is an offering of renewal, cleansing and contemplation, while the vastness of the view from the bath allows us to see how we can see beyond our immediate surroundings and perceive something of the infinite.

While making this tower I was thinking about shelter, how shelter is layered with a sense of continuity and belonging. Working upwards while creating a past, like an old patchwork quilt, full of stories mostly forgotten, but still valued as making up the whole, and offering warmth and shelter. We are patchworks formed of both our own lives but also all the stories that have gone before us, collectively unconscious but sensed deeply when we dare. I was travelling as I did in my childhood, always passing through yet gathering moss like an old stone.

With Pop Art and Sgt Pepper as a reference, Trippy Blooms are a series of showy, stylised flower sculptures, produced in two sizes. Their colours are deliberately dreamy, the unreal hues chosen to please the viewer.
The work is a contemporary response to open spaces, gardens and flowers. Because of their scale, the Blooms make a positive gesture and enjoy the paradox of being real yet unreal. The inspiration came from walking in a now genteel park, whilst acknowledging that once that space had been a seedy ‘pleasure garden’, with many hallucinogens on offer.
The Blooms are designed to look good in groups of mixed or single colours, and in combination of big and small or the same size. They are made in three colour combinations: Rhubarb and Custard, Snowy White and Oranges and Lemons. The petal combinations are deep pink, white, or jaffa orange and all have pale yellow edges. The Blooms have green leaves, edged with darker green and dark green stems. The back of each Bloom is leaf green. The centre stamens are all deep blue.
TheBlooms are made from aluminium, hand painted using weatherproof paint. They show the makers brush strokes and, while intended for indoors or outdoors, the paint will chip if roughly handled.
Trippy Blooms may also be purchased singly. Please enquire if you would like to commission another colour.
