The sunset surfer is hand fabricated from stainless steel. To make the sinuous wave shape more
interesting it is heavily textured with grooves and scuffs and then heat patinated. The heat patination
process creates metallic oxides on the surface of the metal. Stainless steel, like iron, creates several
oxides, where it combines with increasing numbers of oxygen atoms, to give straw, magenta, blue and
red colours. These colours occur because the oxide thickness is the same as the light wavelength of the
particular spectrum colour. This colouration is permanent outdoors but DO NOT RUB OR USE ANY
CLEANING agents it is only a molecule thick. The deep grooving makes different thicknesses in the metal which encourages the temperature differences to get the variety of colours.
