The Great Distraction is a series of contemporary figurative sculptures exploring the tension between human attention and the natural world. The works take the form of hybrid human-animal figures—Minotaurs, ram-like beings, and other mythic forms—rendered in textured ceramic surfaces that evoke earth, erosion, and natural formation.

These figures reference ancient archetypes that were once revered or feared—beings associated with power, instinct, and the forces of nature. They stand grounded and physically present, their forms suggesting strength, weight, and permanence.

Yet within the works, that power appears redirected. The figures turn inward or away, their attention disengaged from the world around them. Rather than embodying dominance or presence, they suggest a quiet relinquishing—an unspoken transfer of agency away from the body and into something unseen.

This contrast lies at the core of the series. The figures remain connected to nature in form, yet disconnected in awareness. What were once godlike embodiments of natural force now appear diminished, not through loss of strength, but through a shift in attention.

The Great Distraction reflects on this condition: a state in which presence is fractured, and power is no longer held within the self, but deferred elsewhere.

“I create ceramic sculptures that explore the quiet intensity of human connection — with animals, myth, and the inner self. My figures often wear animal masks or appear entwined with animals, suggesting companionship, instinct, and transformation. Through texture and gesture, I aim to evoke stillness, emotion, and the sense of a story quietly remembered.

I make these pots in the hope that they will become keepers of family stories , love notes , silly jokes, memories and superstitions and that they in turn become a well loved treasure.” – Jane Flint

Sitting quietly atop a weathered pot, Birdie captures a gentle moment of contemplation. The small figure, with the head of a bird and the body of a human, sits cross-legged holding a book, as though pausing to reflect on the words within.

The contrast between the delicate human form and the watchful bird head gives the sculpture a whimsical, storybook quality. With its softly aged textures and calm, thoughtful pose, Birdie evokes curiosity, imagination and the quiet wisdom found in moments of reflection.

Perched gently atop a weathered vessel, Fawn captures a quiet moment of reflection. With arms folded around crossed legs, the small figure sits in a thoughtful pose, crowned with the delicate head of a young deer. The combination of human posture and animal form creates a gentle sense of wonder, as if the figure belongs to a forgotten woodland tale.

Quietly confident and full of character, Brock blends human presence with the unmistakable markings of a badger. With arms folded calmly across her chest, the figure stands with a gentle sense of self-possession, her expression thoughtful and watchful.

The worn textures of the clothing and softly aged surface give the sculpture a timeless, almost folkloric atmosphere, as though the figure belongs to an old woodland tale.

Blending the human and animal worlds, Fable creates a quietly haunting and poetic presence. The delicate figure, dressed in a simple flowing garment, is crowned with the head of a young deer, its antlers rising gently above. The contrast between the innocence of the dress and the wildness of the animal form gives the sculpture a dreamlike, almost folkloric quality.

With its weathered textures and gentle gaze, the piece feels as though it has stepped out of a story — a symbol of nature, transformation and the mysterious connection between the human spirit and the animal world.

Mysterious and quietly self-assured, Vixen brings together human form and animal instinct in a striking hybrid figure. Dressed in a simple, timeworn garment with arms folded calmly across her chest, the figure bears the head of a fox—alert, intelligent and watchful.

The textured surface and weathered finish give the sculpture an ancient, storybook quality, as though she has stepped from folklore or myth.

In this striking sculpture, a horned, mythic figure sits absorbed in a handheld device, merging ancient symbolism with a distinctly modern habit. The character’s rough, weathered surface and animal-like horns evoke timeless archetypes drawn from folklore and the natural world, yet the figure’s posture is unmistakably contemporary.

This evocative sculpture presents a horned, mythic figure seated in quiet absorption, gazing down at a small handheld device. Blending human and animal forms, the work draws on ancient imagery while confronting a distinctly modern preoccupation. The rough, heavily textured surface gives the figure an earthy, almost archaeological presence.

The post Pan by Eve Shepherd – £5,995 appeared first on Cotswold Sculpture Park Ltd.

This haunting sculpture explores the instinctive, untamed aspects that lie beneath the human surface. A human bust is crowned with powerful hare ears, merging human and animal forms into a striking and symbolic hybrid. The cracked, weathered textures and darkened eyes create an unsettling yet compelling presence, suggesting vulnerability, instinct, and transformation.

With its raw surface and expressive detail, the piece reflects on the primal forces that shape human nature, inviting viewers to consider the fragile boundary between civilisation and our deeper, animal selves.
