  • Rearing Horse by Tom Hiscocks – £4,250

Rearing Horse by Tom Hiscocks – £4,250

Stainless steel on a corten steel base

    155cm x 50cm x 35cm

“In 2020, I set about making a horse head in a different pose to the drinking horses I had made historically. I worked with horses for many years, so there are various poses that resonate.

Horses can be inclined to rear up for various reasons. Some are taught to do so – partly as a performance thing, but mainly rearing up is an anxious response by the horse to something that is happening. In a funny way I see it as a horse expressing themselves – albeit it expressing anxiety. Their eyes are very alert, their ears would typically be back, and their head would be at a slight tilt.

I have tried to capture something of that alert state in this sculpture”.

Girl in Dark Glasses II by Tom Hiscocks – £8,500

    Stainless steel

    180cm x 50cm x 80cm

“When I was much younger I worked with horses for many years. One of the things I did a lot was ‘breaking in’ which is when you teach a young horse to accept a rider. Much of the process was about building trust, and I always used to think that the point where you can do a headstand on their back was a point where you could feel you had built trust. (You can’t do it with every horse!)

Years later I saw a photo of a friend of mine doing exactly that – on a horse in the sea – and I thought this was a good reason to sculpt a horse, so I did – and with the help of a dear friend who modelled the headstand, this is the result.” – Tom Hiscocks

  • Legend of the Lough by Eamonn Higgins – £12,000

Legend of the Lough by Eamonn Higgins – £12,000

    Bronze

    Lifesize horse head

Legend of the Lough was inspired by a commission I received from the arts council under the Re-Imaging Arts Program. The sculpture celebrates the original folktale of the creation of Lough Neagh, where a Horse God of the Tuatha de Danann Eochu let his horse rest in a valley  in the middle of Ulster. The horse, which was a magical horse of the sea(think of the Guinness ad from the 90s) , proceeded to dissolve and flood the valley.” – Eamonn Higgins

A slender stylised horse sculpture with elongated legs and a smooth, flowing form.
