About This Sculpture
‘HairPin Bends Series’

Three works were initial constructed based on observations of a simple small wire structure, two are currently on sale here. I have taken an everyday ubiquitous object commonly found in our homes. Its use, form and shape was of interest, not only for its simplicity but as a flexible, functional and ritualistic metal object but one which was so easily discarded or lost. I wanted to create a series of works that celebrated this object, taking its shape, enlarging it, and giving it a new decorative function. The Big Bouffant and Hairpin Bends, are playful and pieces, a celebration of being female. The works are soft, hard, rigid, yet appear soft, warm, sensual and erotic.

About The Artist
Jill Gibson
Member: Royal Society of Sculptors

The work is primarily research based often utilising an architectural technique called fabric forming. The research initially formed part of my MA course. Since then, the work has been underpinned by exploratory fabric forming research methods, expanding the techniques employed to incorporate a wide range of materials and varied construction methods.
Although employing fabric forming as an initial method of working, the theory that underpins the research considers physical structures, environmental forms and observed human shape and is rooted in a consideration of complex human and environmental issues that face us in a rapidly changing and challenging world and is an on-going exploration of sculpture as a visual language. I currently live and work between two studios, Cullercoats, Newcastle U.K. and in the Charente, France.
