“All things are born, they grow, reach maturity, breed, get old, die and return to the earth. From that, something else grows.”

So this simple circular sculpture captures the essential cyclical nature of life on this planet. Living beings live and die, and their constituent parts are then reused to form another being.

The Shona saying ‘Chinokura Chinokotama’ (Everything That Grows, Burns) relates this idea in terms of the savannah grasses – they grow up from the roots in the rains, and in the dry season they wither and die back, fire consumes them and their ashes feed the following year’s growth.

This piece, for us, represents the pinnacle of what Nesbert has achieved as a sculptor over the last decade. A perfect circle, Nesbert imbues the stone with life through the wave-like movement at the top. Balance, symmetry and simplicity of form – just wonderful!

Springstone is a hard variety of serpentine stone.  It is dense and impermeable with very few flaws that might be exacerbated by frost action, and is suitable for outdoor display. The green veins are natural, they are not cracks or lines of weakness.
