Mark Bowman:
“I’m fascinated by the effects of erosion and this piece is part of a body of work which investigates and develops the subject. For me, in that it is a subtractive process, the act of carving is very similar to erosion.
The inspiration for this particular piece came from a visit to Bamburgh and Holy Island on the north east coast of Northumberland where strong coastal winds, laden with rain, salt and sand, have caused heavy erosion of the sandstone buildings over many centuries.
Carved from local Northumbrian sandstone, “Erosion #3” attempts to capture the striking effects of nature’s work.”
