Endangered by Melanie Watts – £3,750

‘Endangered.’  Fritillary butterfly on brambles.

Exquisite details are captured on this interior mosaic piece, of a beautiful High brown fritillary butterfly pollinating on brambles. This species like so many others is critically endangered.

Melanie has created a range of mosaics highlighting our declining native species for over a decade, including a striking 2 metre mosaic peacock butterfly, set in a freestanding steel frame the artist designed. This can be found in Buckinghamshire, titled ‘Emblazoned’ on the Rocla arts trail, attracting national and international visitors. Melanie partners with conservationists to highlight on social media posts and open days how we can help our flora and fauna to thrive.

Every detail in the butterfly is taken from the artist’s drawn observations of this species – the wing details include little heart shapes which are completely hand scored and finished in fine detail by Melanie, piece by piece. Some of the berries have been created with thicker glass, to give them a lovely raised 3D effect.

Materials:
Hand cut iridescent and stained glass, albertini, gold leaf glass and stained glass are in the mosaic. The circular frame is solid oak, commissioned for this piece, with 2 inlayed brackets set into the frame at the back, so the piece can be securely wall displayed.

Size: 26.5 inches (68cm) diameter, including the frame.

Circular oak frame has fixtures (for neat hanging)
