Deborah says:
My sculptures of figures and of animals range from tiny to life size. The sculptures are made in clay, wax or plaster and straw, then cast into the chosen material.
I am obsessed with casting and constantly try to perfectly recreate the original. A hangover from seeing the casts of the Vesuvius eruption victims in Pompeii at the age of twelve. I love the thought of the most fragile and fleeting thing being saved into something permanent. I hate things to be lost.
My life size sculptures are built in plaster and straw around a metal armature. I then make a sectional mould and cast the sculpture in a resin composite mix, hand making resin strands of hair and mane as I go. Each cast is never identical therefore, (but almost), and the spirit and look of the animal remains the same in each cast.
