‘Release’ was a piece conceived over the national lockdown period, it has a delicate ethereal presence in the landscape and uses the iconic Dandelion Seed as a symbol of rebirth, growth and freedom. Natures will to survive is a recurring theme in my work and it is my hope that this piece encapsulates a sense of optimism and hope for the future. I am continually inspired by natural forms and never more so with this sculpture. I had to mimic the weighting of the Dandelion seed in order to make this piece move; the exact balance between the weight of my pappus, its wind resistance and its counterbalanced seed pod had to be found.
What appeared at first to be a straightforward task has taken months to achieve. Indeed if it were not for the lockdown allowing a greatly extended period of experimentation, I may well have conceded that it was an impossible task. To add to this mix of physics, balance and design is the aesthetics of the sculpture which had to constantly evolve in reaction to the very fine parameters I was working within. I did wondered at first why I had not come across a kinetic moving Dandelion seed before and months later I think I know why. Each element is balanced to within a fraction of a gram so that the seeds appear to float as if taken by the breeze, they are so finely balanced that the weight of rain drops significantly alters the balance, just as in nature. If the pappus is too large it is too heavy and would require a huge counterweight, if the pappus is too small there is not enough wind resistance to overcome the inertia in the bearings. The counterweight is filled with lead, allowing me to weight this to a single gram. The sculpture has had to evolve and has been fine tuned to overcome all obstacles, something which nature has done with design perfection, a design blueprint which is locked away in its DNA.
When the wind blows there are innumerable patterns created by the multiple articulated bearing points, it is a piece that reveals itself slowly allowing space for contemplation. I feel it is sculpture that is full of joy and all the more so for the difficulty of its creation.

A scaled down version of ‘Kinetic Seed Sculpture’, ‘Sycamore Seed Sculpture’ has all the dynamic movement of my larger piece but on a scale to suite a smaller garden. Sycamore Seed Sculpture is now in it’s Second Edition, the new edition has a larger more detailed Wing. Second Edition of 25.
This work is a twofold homage to nature; the seed form and the wind. In the natural world, the two work in perfect harmony, the seed having evolved over millions of years into a finely tuned wing.
This harmony is present throughout nature, it is harmony that we humans strive for, and sometimes struggle to find. I hope that my sculpture is a fascinating and peaceful work that points towards a simpler relationship with the world.
Weathering Steel (cor-ten) is a steel alloy which acquires a stable, rust-like appearance over time. It’s surface has a matt textured finish with a wonderful depth of colour which changes from a light orange to a deep purple over the decades.
Galvanised Steel with a mordent finish leaves a soft textured matt surface with a wonderfully interesting pewter/lead colouring that will darken when wet.

About the sculpture This piece is one in a series that is about contrast and duality. The very solid, grounded and definite figure of the resin base gives support to the more ephemeral, complicated and less certain mobile structure. The two parts give sense and purpose to each other, perhaps in the way that two people might, or even in the way two facets of an individual personality might. About the artist Now living and working in Bath, Edward has a degree in philosophy from Bristol University and in his kinetic sculptures he explores ideas of fragility and strength as well as balance and resolution. Drawing inspiration from the natural world and the human figure, his work is often suggestive of botanical or skeletal structures. The elegant, fluid forms express a sense of harmony and rhythmic energy, coupled with a feeling of tranquil equilibrium.

I have been mesmerised by starlings as they collect together in the evenings just at dusk creating their beautiful shapes in the sky. They try to stay together for safety as a predator finds it much more difficult to attack a Murmuration than a single bird. At the slightest breeze the ‘murms’ wander around following tiny air currents then as the winds increase become more regimented all changing direction in unison like a flock of starlings. the tree or bush form was the obvious shape for the piece right from the first day and each has its own style and character as I create a new piece. I always make a few ‘murms’ touch so that they ‘talk’ to each other as the wind moves them adding a further element to the piece. I have made larger versions for clients but the Bush proves to be a perfect shape and size for a garden setting.

As the title suggests this sculpture is inspired by those Edwardian ladies strolling through parks and gardens with incredibly long-handled parasols with their delicate lace fringes, twirling them as they chat to friends and lovers. After perfecting the parasol to look beautiful and delicate, able to move in the lightest of airs, I hit upon the form of a surreal delicate tree to support them. Further research and I find that they were originally Chinese or Japanese the jury is still debating which, but it seems they were originally green paper and slowly developed an important part of their culture later becoming red. For this reason I gave the stem a black finish with a mist of red over it.
