    View from my decking
As I sit in my decking I look out on the South West’s green landscape, with its high
hedges and abundance of trees. The hills in the distance are Cley Hill in Wiltshire
and the other is Pendle, a hill in Lancashire, I left when I moved recently to the South
West. The lettering along the hedge is Somerset Latin motto, the goat-fish is a
beautiful Roman artefact I saw in the Museum of Somerset in Taunton and the figure
is myself wearing the Scottish saltire. Very much a carving in showing I’m settled in
    the South West.

Pictish standing stones at Black Swan Arts (long gallery)
Whilst stewarding at the Black Swan Arts, I suddenly had the image of the gallery
filled with Pictish decorated standing of Aberdeenshire and Angus. The stone at the
front stands in Kintore churchyard, 20 yards from where I lived as a boy, although
then I had no idea what it was. The view out the side window is the church gates and
the picture hanging on the end wall of the gallery is the Black Swan Arts Centre.

    The Picts at Passchendaele
    W 41 cms H 32.5 cms D 7 cms

    The Picts at Passchendaele
This carving was inspired by the hundredth anniversary of the first World War
Passchendaele battle. When I visited the area I saw these rows and rows of graves.
I also visited a British trench and in my trench you can see a dead corporal lying in it.
The view out the window is from a Paul Nash painting of the trench warfare. These
stone memorials reminded me of the Pictish standing stones of my native North East
Scotland, except they decorate their stones so I decorated these grave stones in
memory of the Scottish soldiers. Out of the door is just a glimmer of the green
    Somerset landscape and hope.

With Nick at the Black Swan (for PM)
For Somerset Arts 2017 I shared a space at the Black Swan Arts Frome with Nick
Weaver, furniture maker. Whilst sitting in the gallery I looked out through the large
windows, past two of Nick’s pieces, to the outdoors and saw the Avebury stone circle
with Pictish symbols upon them and trees in full leaf. And leaving my vision was a
dear friend, Pete Murray who had died only weeks before.

    Before and after Vienna
This isn’t just a carving about my visit to Vienna but also the build up to it and the
being home again. So in the piece are Doric columns from Stourhead, figures in
Heathrow airport, Viennese landmarks, such as Rachel Whiteread’s monument to
the death of so many Jews from Vienna during the Second world War and memories
of my home village seen in a similar village in an Egon Schiele painting. The Pictish
stone in the foreground is the one that was 20 yards from my home as a child.

    Maiden Stone
This piece started as a search for other Kintores (my birthplace in Scotland) and
discovering there were Kintores in Canada and Australia. One in Australia was about
the size my Kintore was when I was growing up—about 600 people. So in this
placing of a Pictish stone beside the river Don, which runs past my Kintore, I added
an Australian Kurrajong Bottle tree. And in memory of splashing in the Don as a child
I added a swimmer from one of David Hockney’s swimming pool series

  • Composition by Paul Burton – £890

Composition by Paul Burton – £890

    “Composition”
    Dimensions : 65 (H) x 50 (W)
    Slate and Glass

Paul Burton had a long and successful global career in the mining supply industry where he experienced so many locations, people and cultures. Following his retirement in 2017 Paul has returned and now concentrating full time on his first love of contemporary art, in particular sculpture. His return to art is influenced by his extensive experiences living and working around the world in the mineral extraction industries, in so many diverse places ranging from the Gobi Desert to the frozen wastes of the Arctic Circle.

His unique steel, slate and glass creations are inspired by the earth’s resources and look to incorporate his unique “Earthlight” sculpture creations back into the landscape.

This Earthlight range of work is Paul’s observation and statement on where we are in the conflicting debates on the resource management of our planet.  These sculptures placed in the landscape with an aspect to the rising or setting sun are powerful visions. Their intent is to question the western environmentalist paradigm.. A qualified observation is that our world would be a very different place to live without the mineral extraction that has contributed to our modern lives. Everything we consume is from the earth (mined, grown or from the ocean). However this industrialisation and modernism has been historically reckless with no real consideration of the environment.

For example, without mining there would be no trains, planes, automobiles, Internet, computers, phones, no cancer scanners or man on the moon, but it has come at a cost. These Earthlight pieces make a statement, They are from the earth and the composition is made up of, slate, silica, steel, lead, crystal et al. They display the earth’s bounty in a beautiful and powerful way, but at the same time providing a portal through them for us to consider the impact on the environment.
