Jonty Hurwitz’s sculpture is inspired by his early childhood experiences with the animal kingdom and his years spent with horses on the narrow bridle path near his home in the English countryside. It serves as a meditation on freedom by symbolising the suppressed inner nature of domesticated animals. Through this creative work of art, Hurwitz captures the wild spirit of horses, while simultaneously highlighting the irony of a world where they are largely ‘owned’. The sculpture honors the idea that horses, and other domesticated creatures, possess an in-built understanding of independence, freedom and self-sufficiency in spite of the disconnection of modern civilization from nature. This unique artwork explores the bond between the animal and its natural habitat, the power of freedom and its lack, and the ways in which our modern scientific civilization attempts to rein it in.

The KORU (Māori for “loop” or “coil”) holds deep significance and meaning in Māori culture in New Zealand (Aotearoa) with it’s spiral shape based on the appearance of a new unfurling silver fern frond.
New Life, Growth, Strength & Peace
Its shape conveys the idea of perpetual movement while the inner coil suggests returning to the point of origin.
TOTEM RAM
The Ram embodies determination, power, and leadership. Unafraid of failure, it sees it as a path to greater things. Taking charge of your own life inspires others to step out of their comfort zones and embrace life with courage.
Strength & Courage
Be True to Yourself
The horns on Totem Ram signify the KORU, hence the perfect juxtaposition of the two.
RED
The colour red in Asia is auspicious, associated with life-generating energy (the sun, blood, and fire) and is the colour of celebrations and prosperity. It is also the colour of the blossom of the Pōhutukawa Tree (also known as the New Zealand Christmas tree as it blossoms in December).
