With an incredibly visual, active mind, British contemporary artist Rachel Ducker has an insatiable desire to create and make. Well practiced in life drawing and with an appreciation of the human form and the emotional dynamics of human nature, combined with being originally trained as a jeweller, lead her to experiment with wire as a medium for sculpting the human form, capturing something ephemeral, either emotive or active.

This piece evolved when my children were young and the toys they were playing with, along with the time I spent with them walking in nature. In my work, birds always symbolize the cycle of life and flying the nest into the bigger world beyond. Finding the courage to leave teaching and try to make a living as an artist has parallels with that first ‘leap of faith’ from the ‘nest’ that all birds have to take.
About the artist: Paul Cox
Paul Cox is an award-winning sculptor. He was awarded the Henry Moore scholarship to study postgraduate sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools, London. His work is now represented internationally in public and private collections. Paul now lives and works in the Southeast where he works on gallery exhibition work and one-off commissions.
He is inspired by his surroundings, the simple, but intricate beauty of the natural world is often mirrored in his work. Living by the sea has had a profound affect on the subject matter as can be visualised by this work.
Paul believes play is important, physically and intellectually, he understands that play is involved in anything that is created. With an open mind to materials and his persistent investigative attitude anything is possible. He likes to be surprised by the process of experimentation; many great things have come from mistakes and accidents that happen during the creative process.

I often turn to nature when looking for inspiration in developing sculptural forms.
Scale always plays a role where the viewer can really engage with the physicality of the work.
The three Chrysanthemums flowers in this piece are bound together to forming a still life embracing the beauty of the natural world.
There are ways to give meaning to the work with this flower representing happiness, optimism, hope, abundance as well as luck and long life.
There is metaphor making for a timeless piece that will never wither but retain its presence far in to the future.
